The food we eat is a problem for us and for our world. Food growth and production contributes ¼ of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than all transportation combined (cars, buses, trucks, planes, etc). And what we eat is the leading cause of death in America and, increasingly, the rest of the world. In the U.S., food-related illnesses and hospitalizations cost us more than  $1 trillion annually. During the pandemic, the single greatest risk factor for death from Covid was obesity and its complications, and yet little time was spent discussing how we might improve — or invest in — our collective health and resilience.

“Big Food” has hijacked government policy, allowing lobbyists, not doctors or scientists, to drive conversations on food production and consumption. One consequence is that only 1 in 10 Americans eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.

It doesn’t have to be this way. As individuals, we can help to change both of these destructive patterns. This talk will show you how.

Join Aligned Center founder Matt Ludmer and Paul Lightfoot, founder and president of BrightFarms, in a discussion of why it’s the perfect time to re-imagine the food system for the sake of our health, for job creation, and to reverse climate change. Learn how incentives for healthier eating and practices such as regenerative agriculture can put us on the right path towards personal and environmental health.

Aligned Living Conversations is our seasonal series hosted by founder Matt Ludmer that explores each of the four quadrants of Aligned Living: Mind-Body Awareness, Work & Wealth Abundance, Heartfelt Community, and Knowledge of Systems. Matt hosts a prominent thought leader for a deep dive into paradigm-shifting ideas and practices that not only offer exciting perspectives, but uncover new possibilities in awareness, connection, and success.

This conversation investigates the Knowledge of Systems quadrant and will be a rich tapestry of information, actionable items you can bring into your own life, and what is ultimately a message of hope for a better and healthier tomorrow.

Paul Lightfoot is the founder and president of BrightFarms, which builds and operates high-tech greenhouse farms to eliminate time, distance and costs from the food system. Paul has been leading the company since 2011 on its mission to provide consumers with the freshest, tastiest and most responsibly grown produce. BrightFarms is creating the first national brand of local produce, and does so with materially less land and water

Beginning his career as a Wall Street attorney, Paul went on to found Foodline, a venture-backed software company providing customer and reservations information technology to restaurants. He then became CEO of BSG (and its predecessor, AL Systems), which provided enterprise software solutions to improve the supply chains of large retailers and distributors.

Paul has been featured on Fast Company’s list of “1000 Most Creative People in Business,” was recognized as a “Rising Star in Retail” by Chain Store Age magazine, and was appointed to the USDA’s Fruit & Vegetable Advisory Committee (FVIAC) by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 2020. In addition to FVIAC, Lightfoot also sits on the board of the United Fresh Produce Association and is the Founder and Chairman of the Controlled Environment Agriculture Food Safety Coalition.
