LECTURE THEME AND SCHEDULE:

These presentations are offered via video conferencing and free of charge to create valuable and engaging learning opportunities during these challenging times.

Each presentation will last approximately one hour and include an introductory talk, a contemplative practice, and time for questions.

Tuesday, April 7th – The Wild Imagination of Fernando Pessoa

Fernando Pessoa is widely recognized as the greatest Portuguese poet of modern times. During this presentation you will learn that Pessoa was much more than a poet. In fact he was many poets. Besides writing as himself, Pessoa wrote in the name of at least 72 other personalities. He insisted that these were not just pseudonyms. They were other beings that would write through his body. Perhaps most astounding is the fact that three of these other poets, all of whom had styles dramatically different from each other and from Pessoa, himself, are all considered world class poets in their own right.

Tuesday, April 14th – The Holistic Vision of Charles Sanders Peirce

Charles Sanders Peirce is arguably the greatest thinker that American has yet produced. Peirce was a scientist who helped inspire Heisenberg’s famous uncertainty principle. He was a linguist who co-discovered the field of semiotics. And he was a pioneering philosopher. In this presentation you will explore his profound evolutionary theory and discover why he believed that Darwin’s theory hadn’t gone far enough. According to Peirce, the whole universe is evolving, including the seemingly immutable laws of time, space, and physics.

Tuesday, April 21st – The Courageous Freedom of Anaïs Nin

During the first half of the 20th century a beautiful and courageously free-spirited woman named Anaïs Nin pushed boundaries and social norms while producing some of the most important writing of her time. Nin is recognized by many as one of the finest writers of female erotica and her diaries have guided millions of readers to a deeper exploration of themselves. In this presentation you will explore Nin’s life and the ideas she shared in her writings. You will see how her bold willingness to embrace life fully forced all of us to reconsider what it could mean to be human.

Tuesday, April 28th – The Visionary Genius of Gertrude Stein

During the opening decades of the 20th century, 27 rue de Fleurus on the left bank of Paris was home to Gertrude Stein and her famous salons. In her home Stein assembled one of the greatest assortments of artists and writers ever gathered in one place. Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Henri Matisse, were only a few of the many geniuses that came seeking Stein’s advice and critique. In this presentation you will learn about the birthplace of modern art and literature and its midwife, Gertrude Stein.
