SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Visionary Knowing & Mythic Imagination in Writing and in Life
DESCRIPTION:The business of stories is waking up. ~ Dr. Martin Shaw \nWe are living in a time of unprecedented change when the stories we have assumed to be true about identity\, what has value and whose story matters are undergoing radical revision. \nOur words matter. The stories we tell ourselves and each other matter. And each of us has a role to play shaping the evolving narrative of our times. \nBut to do so we need to find wisdom in unexpected places and learn to see what has perviously been unseen. \nOur own visionary knowing and mythic imagination offer volumes of understanding in a flash of insight\, though it may be difficult to describe. We are left to discern dream-like symbols\, savor newfound awareness and wonder at these leaps in consciousness. \nSo when it comes to the liminal and the literary\, how do we make sense of these mysterious moments? And how do we translate the ineffable into writing? \nJoin award-winning author Kristin Kaye to explore liminality in our lives and on the page. \nLiterature that includes so-called ‘fantastic’ experience tends to fall into a range of fiction sub-genres\, from Sci-Fi and Fantasy on one end to Magical Realism on the other. Where Sci-Fi and Fantasy create entirely new worlds\, Magical Realism is largely based in the mundane with elements that blur the lines of reality. \nBut are the elements ‘magical?’ Or are they ‘real? The answer is different depending on culturally accepted definitions of what constitutes ‘reality.’ As a writer this becomes an interesting question when considering how to write varieties of experience. \nThis writing workshop offers: \n\nmeditation to quiet the mind to see old stories with new eyes\ntools and practices to explore liminality\nwriting time with simple exercises to get the flow going\nreading your pages if you are so inspired\nframeworks for translating hard-to-express experiences into powerful scenes and stories\n\nWriters of all ages and skill levels welcome. The only prerequisite is curiosity and a desire to share your insights and stories with others. \nABOUT YOUR HOST: Kristin Kaye holds an MFA in Creative Writing and is an award-winning author\, ghostwriter and book coach. Books include her novel TREE DREAMS (Winner 2018 Int’l Book Awards\, ‘A superbly written tale filled with realistic\, engaging and quirky characters.’ ~ Kirkus Reviews) ) and her memoir IRON MAIDENS: The Celebration of the Most Awesome Female Muscle in the World (Finalist 2006 Oregon Book Awards\, One of 5 Books for Women Who Resist Easy Definition ~ Utne). Kristin has taught workshops at schools\, colleges and environmental organizations across the US. She is a meditation teacher and her own decade-long practice of Tibetan Buddhism informs her creative process. Learn more at kristinkaye.com. \nNovember 16\, 6:30 – 9pm EST on Zoom\, $65 \nREGISTER NOW \n  \nSHARE THE GOLD: Kristin is offering a free workshop to encourage writing in community during these challenging times. SUMMARY:Tools for Interacting with Large-Scale Systems for Change
DESCRIPTION:The truth is simple: we need change in our world\, and we need it soon. But how? Individual action seems too small and too sporadic to right some of the biggest wrongs facing us today. \nIn this 2.5 hour workshop\, we’ll be meeting and working with an expert in system-level change\, Georgia Rubenstein\, Systems Change Coaching Lead at Forum for the Future. We’ll first come to better understand what systems are\, how they work\, and how we can use them to intervene for the benefit of all beings. \nThe challenges we face are complex and interconnected. They’re global in scale\, with many root causes and contributing factors\, supported by deep-rooted institutions and structures. But we can create change\, if we’re smart about how and where we act. This workshop will explain what you can do. \nWe will break into groups as we learn about and experiment with a few different models for understanding systems\, and exploring how we might be able to influence and impact them. While we may not be working to change some of the biggest and most impactful systems in the world\, we can use a systems approach to help understand\, work with\, and live into complexity\, as we choose to engage in ways that resonate with us the most deeply. \nYou’ll walk away with knowledge of things like snappy systems\, the multi-level perspective\, and the iceberg model\, which may very well influence how you see your world from this point forward. This workshop is being held in concert with OIST Foundation. \nGeorgia Rubenstein\, Systems Change Coaching Lead\, Forum for the Future \nGeorgia leads Forum’s global system change coaching workstream\, supporting organizations to build their capacity and capabilities to catalyze and sustain structural and transformative system change. She works with Forum colleagues and the broader field to discover ways to bring systemic mindsets and practices into the “everyday-ness” of how we work\, and supports partners to do this in the ways that are most relevant for their needs and ambition. \nHer recent work has included supporting the nonprofit organization FoodCorps’ launch of the multi-stakeholder reWorking Lunch initiative\, aiming to provide healthy\, sustainable meals to students around the US; and designing a systemic process and approach for the Growing our Future project\, in support of a just transition to regenerative agriculture in the US. Georgia also led the initial development and launch of the School of System Change in North America and was on the facilitation and design team for the first two Basecamp Americas programs. She is currently re-entering work and will be co-facilitating Basecamp Americas again this summer\, after embarking on the ultimate system changing project of bringing a human into the world in March 2020. \nOIST Foundation \nThe mission of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Foundation\, Inc. is to promote innovative global scientific breakthroughs through enhancing and strengthening science and technology research and related programs at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) and to empower Americans to support the sustainable development of Okinawa and deepen U.S.-Japan relations through OIST.

SUMMARY:Leading Without Easy Answers with Doug Sundheim
DESCRIPTION:Build momentum for your big idea. \nWe have had a lot of uncertainty in the last 18 months\, from Covid to inflation to political polarization. Yet it is the ability to move forward in the face of uncertainty that allows for success. In fact\, this course can teach you how to harness the power of uncertainty for yourself. \n \nThis course will allow you to build momentum for your big idea\, through: \n\nUnderstanding how to take smart risks in uncertain times\nGetting clear on your objectives and goals\nWhat it means to execute your idea\nWorking with polarity (doubting yourself vs trusting yourself\, needing to move fast vs moving slow enough to be thorough\, the need for stability vs the need for dynamism\, and the creative tension between taking risks and seeking safety)\nBringing a passion project to life\n\nThis course will explore how you can fine-tune and sharpen your skills in a world that seems to be in a near-constant state of uncertainty. You’ll bring a specific idea\, project\, or company challenge you’re trying to overcome and advance\, and dig in with Doug and the rest of the group. Classes are highly interactive workshops with a talk\, presentation of a new skill set\, sharing with others\, and individualized coaching with Doug. \nTake this class if: \n\nYou have led well in the past but are finding the current state of the world hard to navigate\nYou need a better understanding of how to lead\nYou’re launching something and want to be as prepared as possible\nYou are managing others and want to feel more confidence in your skills\nYou have been successful as a leader in the past but have plateaued in your skills\n\nWe’ll explore the four ways you can lead without an easy answer. \nWeek 1: Get clear \nThis first class is foundational. We’ll get clear on what you’re doing and why\, your directional vision\, and your underlying values. We’ll look at your values driving you\, and how to keep them from getting static. Clarity comes from seeing your ideas in a dynamic way\, not a static goal line to be crossed. \nWeek 2: Get aligned  \nAlignment builds on clarity. From here\, we’ll talk about the reality that we can’t always get everyone aligned with our vision\, and what we can do about it. Alignment might not mean that everyone agrees with the path ahead\, but it does mean that everyone is on-board with moving in that direction. In this week’s class\, we’ll talk about how to do check-ins and establish open dialog that allows convergence around your idea and helps inspire others to follow your lead\, even if they’re not totally sold on the direction. \nWeek 3: Get moving  \nMoving means knowing all the moving parts of what’s to come. Movement requires the plan be implemented in a way that some are doing work\, some are overseeing it\, and everyone is being held accountable to delivering on their end of the task. We learn to evolve as we move. There’s a dynamism in moving and we’ll learn\, evolve\, and change as we go. \nWeek 4: Get better  \nHere we stop and look at the big picture. If you’re an operator\, the leader\, what are you doing to personally grow? How are you helping the team excel better? Doing the right kind of research\, which we’ll explore\, is one of the foundational practices in getting better. We will look at the conditions for a highly effective team and see how yours is stacking up. We’ll analyze your approach to personal development and see if it will help you better lead. The idea here is that leaders learn to sharpen their own saws\, not other people’s\, to inspire growth and innovation from everyone on the team. In other words\, we lead by example. \nThe course will be by Zoom\, and will be every two weeks on Wednesday nights from 7-9 pm EST\, starting October 20th\, 2021. \nDates: October 20\, November 3\, November 17\, December 1 \nTime: 7 – 9:00 PM EST \nCost: $150 for the 4-part series \n

SUMMARY:Embodied Zen: Meditation’s Missing Link with Meido Moore Roshi
DESCRIPTION:Meditation these days most often focuses on the mind\, not the body and not the subtle energies of the body. This prevents us from getting a full sense of our human potential\, and can rob us of the clarity that comes when we’re in touch with the whole of our immediate experience.  \nThe ancient Rinzai lineage of Zen preserves this wholeness. Rinzai meditation involves the body\, mind\, breath\, and subtle energies of the whole person. This allows for an extremely direct practice that can revolutionize your direct experience of yourself.   \nIn this talk and practice session\, author and Rinzai Zen master Meido Moore  Roshi – also a master teacher of traditional martial  arts – reveals these methods of working with the senses\, the breath\, and the body. Drawing upon secret oral instructions  transmitted in the Rinzai Zen lineage he will explain how a spirituality engaging our whole being is ignored only at great peril. And he will explain how we can regain the power that comes with an embodied existence. This talk is experiential\, and participants will learn several simple practices that they can use immediately to dissolve anxiety\, calm overactive thinking\, and experience our intrinsic clarity. \nThe Purchase College Contemplative Studies Minor Program\, Dao Collective\, the Westchester Meditation Center and The Aligned Center welcome you to meet Meido Moore Roshi. \nThis public talk takes place in person and will also be livestreamed. Please sign up in advance to receive the livestream link. \nDate: November 3\, 2021 \nTime: 6:00 to 7:30 pm ET  \nLocation: The Aligned Center\, 1 Bridge Street\, Foundry Building Suite 64\, Irvington\, New York 10533 \n*In-person attendees will be asked to show proof of vaccination.* \nCost: Name-your-price\, from free to $50 suggested ($0/$25/$50). \nABOUT MEIDO MOORE ROSHI \nMeido Moore Roshi is the abbot of Korinji\, a monastery in Wisconsin\, and guiding teacher of the Korinji Rinzai Zen Community. He is the author of The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice and Hidden Zen: Practices for Sudden Awakening and Embodied Realization (both from Shambhala Publications). \nMeido Roshi began Zen practice in 1988 and trained under three teachers in the line of the great 20th century Rinzai master Omori Sogen Roshi: the late Tenzan Toyoda Rokoji\, in whose training hall he resided for seven years while also enduring a severe training in traditional martial arts; Dogen Hosokawa Roshi (Omori Roshi’s main dharma heir)\, with whom he trained for fifteen years; and So’zan Miller Roshi\, with whom he trained for three years. He has completed the koan curriculum of this lineage\, and in 2008 received inka shomei or “mind seal”: recognition as an 86th-generation Zen lineage holder empowered to transmit the full range of Rinzai Zen practices.  \nAside from Zen\, Meido is also ordained in the Mt. Koshikidake tradition of Shugendo and works to establish Shugendo practice places within natural areas in North America. For many years he was a professional martial art teacher; he is certified as a shihan (master-level teacher) by the Aikido World H.Q. in Tokyo. He travels widely\, conducting retreats and other events across the United States and Europe. \nABOUT THE CONTEMPLATIVE STUDIES MINOR AT PURCHASE COLLEGE\, SUNY \nThe Contemplative Studies Minor at Purchase College\, SUNY\, is dedicated to integrating the art and science of contemplative practices into academic work in order for students to develop self-knowledge\, resilience\, critical awareness\, and positive social engagement. This experiential approach complements a rigorous interdisciplinary academic investigation and discussion of contemplative practices in the sciences\, humanities\, and arts. The minor is composed of courses already offered at Purchase\, as well as the framework for faculty to develop courses dedicated to the minor. In addition\, students can design an internship/independent study under the supervision of a Contemplative Studies advisor. \nABOUT THE DAO COLLECTIVE \nThe Dao Collective was founded by Dody Chang\, L.Ac.\, and Doctor of Chinese Medicine\, to share her favorite teachers – experts in the fields of East Asian Medicine and spiritual practices – with colleagues and friends.  I invite anyone with a heartfelt dedication to healing\, learning\, and inspiring others to join us.  \nABOUT THE WESTCHESTER MEDITATION CENTER \nFormed in 2009\, the Westchester Meditation Center (WMC)\, formerly the Westchester Buddhist Center (WBC)\, presents the teachings and meditation practices as transmitted by Chögyam Trungpa\, Rinpoche\, to friends and neighbors in Westchester County\, New York. \nIn addition to dharma talks and meditation sessions\, WMC offers in-depth\, text-based courses\, and periodically hosts visiting Buddhist teachers and other noteworthy speakers\, movies and other celebratory events. \nToday\, WMC is led by Jane and Derek Kolleeny\, and Gene Bobker.  We emphasize an experiential Buddhism\, one focused on ordinary\, daily life. New and seasoned practitioners of all traditions are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Aligned Living Conversation: Systems Change at Scale
DESCRIPTION:You want the world to change\, but what you’re doing isn’t working. So what should be done? \nThe answer is to be smarter about where and how you apply yourself. When we look at the systems most in need of reform — corrections\, environmental\, educational\, social\, healthcare\, just to name a few — we see huge and lumbering systems that are largely insulated from individual actions.  \nWe need to be acting on the systems that have the greatest impact on the world if we want to create real and lasting change\, and we need to be acting in specific ways. Otherwise\, these big systems will simply pull more and more good intentions into them but remain the same. If you’re going to change the world\, it’s best to do so in a way that actually matters.   \nJoin Matt Ludmer\, Jen Berman\, and Melissa Gavin to talk about how we can understand systems in a way that allows our actions to have the maximum impact\, so that we can indeed create a better tomorrow. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who desires a better and safer world for us and for our children and grandchildren.  \nJen Berman is the Training and Partnerships Officer for the Garfield Foundation\, and has been working with the Forum for the Future’s School of System Change as a strategic partner and facilitator since 2018.  \nMelissa Gavin is the Chief Executive Officer of the RE-AMP Network\, which focuses on catalytic efforts to reduce global warming pollution and ensure Midwestern states lead the nation’s transition to a clean energy economy. \n  \n=================== \nAt The Aligned Center\, our model for Aligned Living is inspired by a Four Quadrant framework used in Ken Wilber’s Integral philosophy that represents four dimensions of our experience: individual inner and outer experience\, and collective inner and outer experience. Our Four Quadrant model includes Mind-Body Awareness\, Work & Wealth Abundance\, Heartfelt Community and Knowledge of Systems. \nAligned Living Conversations shed light on the possibilities and practices for living fully into all dimensions of our lives. With our world in the midst of seismic shifts\, Aligned Living allows us to foster positive change for ourselves\, our families and the world. \nThis conversation sits in the quadrant of Knowledge of Systems. We invite you to join us. \n

SUMMARY:Aligned Living Conversation: Cultural Intelligence in an Age of Racial Reckoning
DESCRIPTION:Race in America is a complex topic. It can feel hard to wrap your arms around\, particularly since our lives are filled with so many commitments. Even if you interact with diverse groups of people\, conversations about race can feel abstract\, especially because of loud voices and powerful emotions on all sides. Being part of the solution starts with curiosity about what racism and antiracism have to do with your life. It’s as much an inward reflection as about external problems. This isn’t easy\, because it requires slowing down from a busy life long enough to put yourself in others’ shoes and wonder what they are thinking and feeling. It also involves questioning things you’ve never asked hard questions about before. This can feel uncomfortable but also refreshing. It’s a chance to learn something new about yourself and the country you live in. As importantly\, you get to be part of the solution.  \nMaking this topic personal is important.  Most of us have been exposed to good-faith attempts to heal this divide in open-hearted but incomplete ways. The traditional liberal school of “colorblind” thought (now adopted by many conservatives) correctly identifies the arbitrary nature of racial categories yet bypasses the exclusions and violence of American history. Many in the antiracist school rightly document how far we have to go and make it personal yet deny real progress\, get caught in shaming\, and reinforce racial essentialism. Neither school of thought gives you a chance to make this personal and does so in a respectful and open way. Getting where we need to go requires being part of a truly integral solution.  \nGreg Thomas\, Jewel Kinch-Thomas\, and Amiel Handelsman will talk with Matt about how to explore these topics in a way that provides tangible results. Looking at American history\, reflecting on our own experiences\, and imagining a better future—in a safe environment that allows people to speak freely and honestly—helps us to create a better tomorrow starting today.  \nWe will complete the conversation with an offer from Jewel\, Greg\, and Amiel to join them in Stepping Up\, a six-month course starting in October and devoted to exploring these very topics in a personal and transformative way. Sign up for that course now to receive the early bird special. \nAbout the Aligned Living Conversations Series \nAt The Aligned Center\, our model for Aligned Living is inspired by a Four Quadrant framework used in Ken Wilber’s Integral philosophy that represents four dimensions of our experience–individual inner and outer experience\, and collective inner and outer experience. Our Four Quadrant model includes Mind-Body Awareness\, Work & Wealth Abundance\, Heartfelt Community and Knowledge of Systems. \nAligned Living Conversations shed light on the possibilities and practices for living fully into all dimensions of our lives.
