Join us at The Aligned Center in Irvington, NY, for our first event in the brand new Film+Maker Series with EngageAsia!

Q+A with filmmaker Barry Frechette, and Peter Grilli of the Japan Society of Boston after the film.

PAPER LANTERNS is an award-winning documentary about Shigeaki Mori, a Japanese man who witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima and spends his life bringing peace and closure to the families of those who died in its wake, including 12 American Prisoners of War. It is a film about compassion and humanity, and about valuing all lives equally regardless of nationality or uniform.

PAPER LANTERNS has been shown several times at the United Nations in NYC (sponsored by the UN’s Office of Disarmament Affairs), and at other international UN facilities. The film has been shown with great success in many international film festivals, as well as in colleges and high schools in Japan and the U.S.

We have the unique opportunity to host this screening during the week of the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a week when, in Japan, many paper lanterns are floated down the river in front of the Hiroshima Peace Museum to commemorate those who lost their lives, and to symbolize their peaceful transition to another world (a ceremony called “Toro nagashi.”).

PAPER LANTERNS was funded by the U.S.-Japan Foundation, the Toshiba International Foundation, and by personal contributions from scores of individuals via cloud-funding.
